Planning permission is not usually required for small-scale PV installations.
Maintenance costs for cells are low and generally only involve cleaning the panels.
PV systems produce no greenhouse gases and a typical domestic system can save approximately 1.2 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

1. Daylight hits the photovoltaic cells and is converted to clean electricity.
2. An inverter converts electricity from direct to alternating current, for use in the home.
3. When the solar PV system is producing more energy than is needed, power is exported to the grid. At night, power is imported from the grid in the normal way.

1.5 kw PV panels would be the normal capacity on an average house. This would cover an area of 12 square meters.
